BIOGRAPHY

Doug Osa is an accomplished artist whose paintings and etchings have been collected since the mid 1980’s.   His work has been included in many solo, group and juried exhibitions and has received awards from the American Artists’ Professional League and the Allied Artists of America. His paintings and prints are also included in notable public, private and institutional collections nationwide and have been the subject of articles in Southwest Art Magazine, the Artist’s Magazine, and several books.  He has taught drawing and painting at the university level and in workshops and has completed numerous commissioned paintings.  He received bachelors degrees in biology and fine art from Kansas State University and an MFA in drawing and painting from the University of Kansas.  He also studied figure drawing and painting at the Art Students League in New York City and drawing at the Kansas City Art Institute.  His interests in art are wide ranging with notable influences on his art being the 17th century Dutch masters and a number of contemporary realist painters.

After a six year hiatus to study biology and architecture, Doug renewed his interest in art in 1976.  By 1978 working from observation had become the foundation of his work. Each work begins as an image in the “mind’s eye”, given form through a series of sketches and then committed to through a close study of the subject’s composition and color.  Photographs supplement the process. Some works involve thematic and conceptual considerations while others simply celebrate the joy of seeing.  His desire is to present the viewer with a convincing “sense of place” as well as an appreciation for the underlying order and beauty of those things observed.  He and his wife Ruthie live in Olathe, Kansas.
