While
with an eye made quiet by the power
of harmony, and the deep power of joy,
see into the life of things.
William
Wordsworth
This
disposition, expressed in Wordsworth’s poem Lines Composed Above
Tintern Abbey, is the motivating factor
in the paintings and prints of
Doug Osa. By the late 1970's painting directly, or "en plein air"
, from the landscape had become the foundation of his work. His desire is
to seek the underlying order and beauty of those things observed. The resulting
works are, in effect, records of those observations.
The
subjects he chooses to work from lend themselves to this scrutiny. They are
not so much sought after as they are discovered, sometimes in the most unlikely
places. This discovery often takes place over many visits to an area throughout
the seasons and years. The conviction of working directly from nature produces
images conceived in the mind’s eye, brought into existence through line
and color resulting in that elusive sense of place.
